gerlach en koop

Artist collective gerlach en koop, - written in lower case and without - has been working together as one artist since 2000.

An opaque artist about whom no biographical information is known. Sometimes they do not even show art, but the space in which that art could be shown, work by others, a hole in the wall or a commission to the viewer. They work with the conventions of exhibitions and the visual arts; titles, title cards, descriptions ... elements that recur in every exhibition, but here relate to ‘the art’ in a different hierarchy. So they work both with, in and alongside the art and in the most meticulous way possible. Minutely, art is dissected like a scout dissects an owl ball and looks in wonder at all the bones of mice, frogs and bats. It does not stop at looking, however, the owl ball is reassembled in such a way that the mouse bones seem to say something about those of the frog, while the frog and the bat suddenly turn out to be the same animal. Although their actions are largely of an intellectual nature, there is indeed ‘creation’. Works are created, though they are mostly situations that are created, a situation where any insignificant detail can be the artwork-or part of the exhibition. Here, it is not the museum that determines what the work is, but the artist, in consultation with the viewer.
