Toon Leën — Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen : Lecture performance
EN
In response to the theme of Fred&Ferry’s farewell exhibition and to the music selected by the gallerists to complement the artists’ contributions, Toon Leën asked jazz musician Els Vandeweyer to interpret two baroque compositions: Domenico Scarlatti’s keyboard sonata in C minor, K.22 and the sinfonia and chorus of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata BWV 12. Vandeweyer’s arrangements for vibraphone, recorded in Berlin on 21 August 2026, served as the basis for a two-channel video work in two parts, in which images from both political and art historical contexts enter into a dialogue with each other and with the music.
The work’s first part, titled Die Unschuld der Bilder, has been on display from the start of the exhibition. On 31 October, a second part will be added, titled Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen. On that occasion, Toon Leën will present a lecture performance that unravels some of the image entanglements presented in the video installation. This lecture performance will address questions of disinformation, democratic backsliding, and Russia’s war against Ukraine and the West, and will explore how images influence our understanding of these challenges for Europe today.
Bio
Toon Leën’s work moves between painting, video, and lecture performance, and reflects on questions around authorship and authenticity, abstraction and empathy, and the agency of images. In 2025, he defended his PhD in Artistic Research at Hasselt University and PXL-MAD, School of Arts. His dissertation, titled Image Entanglements (Beeldverwikkelingen), was accompanied by four lecture performances, A Big Basket of Apples (2022–2025), Homage to an Absent Pony (2023–2025), Homage to the Dash (2022–2025) and The Irresistible Image and the Sceptical Gaze (2023–2025). Earlier projects include lecture performances such as Sarah Bal, Student of Colours (2019), The Case of the Ridiculous Curator (2018), the concert lecture Correspondances mystérieuses in collaboration with pianist Lucas Blondeel (2019–2021), the video Zwischen den Bildern (2020), and the artist book Personally, I’m Most Interested in the Shapes and Colours (MER. Paper Kunsthalle, 2015).

Zijn dissertatie, met de titel Image Entanglements (Beeldverwikkelingen), ging gepaard met de opvoering van vier lecture performances, A Big Basket of Apples (2022–2025), Homage to an Absent Pony (2023–2025), Homage to the Dash (2022–2025) en The Irresistible Image and the Sceptical Gaze (2023–2025). Eerder werk omvat de lecture performances Sarah Bal, Student of Colours (2019), The Case of the Ridiculous Curator (2018), en de concert-lezing Correspondances mystérieuses (2019–2021) in samenwerking met pianist Lucas Blondeel. In 2015 verscheen van hem het kunstenaarsboek Personally, I’m Most Interested in the Shapes and Colours (uitgeverij MER.
