The exhibition --Sarah Bal-- featured fourteen paintings and three video lectures that were linked by three elements: the fictional persona of Sarah Bal, an artist fascinated by colour, played by the actress Mathilde Irrmann; excerpts from music by C.P.E. Bach and Franz Liszt, played by pianist Lucas Blondeel; and the figure of the dash*, here used to build bridges between politics and art, the serious and the playful, reality and fiction.
As a supplement to the exhibition, three lecture performances were scheduled on three consecutive Saturdays in February and March 2022. The first two lectures, Sarah Bal, Student of Colours (2019) and A Big Basket of Apples (2022), contextualised the exhibition's protagonist Sarah Bal. The third lecture, titled Homage to the x (2022), continued the dialogue that took place in the exhibition between a painterly study of shapes and colours and a subjective iconographical exploration of coups d'état.
On 11 and 12 March, Sarah Bal periodically guided the visitors around the exhibition and, together with Toon Leën, gave a lecture performance especially created for the exhibition.
