Antoine Waterkeyn stands for a painting that does not want to be understood as wall furniture or room decoration.
His often life-sized paintings, executed with unusual, 1-layer' lacquer paint (unruly to paint with and to look at), fight for an existence as independent, autonomous objects and in this way enter into a dialogue with the viewer, who - as soon as he visits Waterkeyn's exhibition and moves between his paintings placed in space - becomes a character in Waterkeyn's world. ( Jo Coucke)
Antoine Waterkeyn's artistic practice manifests itself in the perpetual writing and rewriting of plots and narrative constructions. He plays with archetypes and characters from famous novels or from our collective memory. In his works, the narrative is deliberately left open to interpretation.
