Geert Van Hijfte links 23 locations and 52 artists to the theme Our Darkness, referring to Anne Clark's song – a milestone in darkwave.
With her rhythmic, poetic voice and David Harrow's menacing synths, Clark laid the foundation for later genres such as techno and trance. In the 1980s, Van Hijfte formed a DJ collective with soul connoisseur John Mogensen. That cult record was often used as a hook to get everyone on the dance floor. And it was precisely that song that inspired Van Hijfte for this second edition. ‘A top record,’ says Van Hijfte. ‘With poetic lyrics about the human condition and existential darkness, set to minimalist electronic synth lines and hypnotically heavy drum rhythms.’
Each artist participating in this art biennial interprets the theme in a different way. But they all share the same enthusiasm for harmonising work and space. Many artists are creating new work for this Biennial, sometimes in situ. Others are linking existing work to the theme.
Johan Vandeputte, Patrick Lefebure, Bruno Matthys, Dries Van Melkebeke, Sofie Muller, Els De Smedt and Hanne Teugels – together with Geert Van Hijfte – contributed to this second edition.
