‘Originally an Aztec proverb, this sentiment laments the importance of finding balance in a
world, where leading a purely virtuous life is fairly difficult, thanks to the inherent nature of human behaviour and the ‘slippery’ earth on which we navigate. Maxime Brigou and Lenny Vervaeke both explore time, memory and perception, although at times,in varying ways. A common denominator can be found in the way both take historical elements and attributes, then make it their own through artistic interpretation. Through layered materials and ephemeral compositions rooted in inspiration from old masters, Brigou evokes both recognition and uncertainty, forcing the audience toquestion their idea of reality. Vervaeke on the other hand, recalls and reanimates historical artefacts, altering ancient symbols tocreate new narratives and insights. His work blurs the line between past and present, questioning the authenticity of our renderings of history, suggesting it is not a static truth but still anopen-ended and evolving tale.’
