In an interview with sculptor Bernd Lohaus, Laurence Petrone (°1987) read the sentence 'eingeschloβenes weitet sich aus. / what is enclosed expands' and recognised his words. Everything is enclosed in itself. It is a matter of looking closely. But what makes one see?
In her artistic practice Petrone is guided by the sensory qualities of a material; its tangible character or texture and the intervention in space. She has worked with stone, copper, lead, water, steel, turmeric, soil, corn plants, fabric, bronze, paper.
Her practice as a sculptor is connected with her research as a historian. The studio becomes a place for her to think in word and matter. From this embodied thinking, she wants to bring people from different domains together.
In 2021 she co-founded FAAR, an Antwerp based collective of painters and sculptors. She has participated in group exhibitions in a.o. CENTRALE for contemporary art (Brussels), Havenhuis (Port of Antwerp-Bruges), KIOSK (Ghent), FRED&FERRY Gallery (Antwerp), Galerie B by Sabrina & Isy Brachot (Durbuy), Coppejans Gallery (Antwerp), ZEIT: Post-war & contemporary abstract art (Antwerp), Galery A (Amsterdam).
Petrone holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts (Sculpture, 2022) from the Royal Academy Antwerp, and a Master’s Degree in History and Human Rights from the University of Ghent and the European Inter-University Centre Venice.
